Knowledge, Skill and Confidence Build Savvy
Most riding schools focus on just that ... riding. But that's only part
of the skill and knowledge we need to become safe and skillful with horses.
Horses are much more than just a riding animal -- they're an attitude on
four legs! Horses have instincts, thoughts and emotions about people, and
this determines how they respond or react, whether positively or negatively.
Without realizing it, people can trigger survival instincts in a horse
and the consequences can be great! A horse does not think he's going to
be hurt -- he believes he's going to be killed and will do anything to
escape if he perceives his survival is threatened. Because we aren't normally
taught how a horse thinks, then the bolting, rearing, striking, bucking,
kicking and biting are labeled are vices when, in fact, they are sure signs
of defense, of domination, or of disrespect.
Horses are herd animals who have a strong need for social order. They will
do battle to find out who is the strongest, fastest, quickest and bravest.
Once the alpha horse has been established the games go on until the pecking
order is established ... and it doesn't stop there! When people come into
the picture, the horse will play the same dominance games with us!
Understanding horse psychology is essential to becoming skillful with horses.
When you understand the importance that survival, comfort and play have
for horses, and you learn to read their body language, understand their
games and needs and then play those games with them you get to enter a
very special zone! ....The Horseman's Zone! It is a level of savvy that
is rare in the horse world today, but it's a savvy that's unmistakable
in the students of Parelli Natural Horse*Man*Ship.
If you've ever been to a Level 2 or 3 clinic, or a demonstration by Pat
Parelli or students of PNH, you'll witness a harmony and connection between
horse and human that is so rarely seen it almost looks magical. This is
special! And it's available to anyone with the desire and commitment to
attain it!
Pat Parelli's Levels program has revolutionized the journey to become a
Horseman. No matter what your background or experience, you can get better
results with your horse with his system. You'll find that Levels 1 to 3
are for teaching the human ... we need to learn to think like a horse and
to play their games. Now that you know how to communicate with him, Levels
4 to 6 are about teaching the horse. Levels 7 to 10 are simply for the
pure love and art of horsemanship!
It's essential to start at the appropriate spot ... you learn a language
from the beginning and that is what Levels 1 to 3 are all about -- learning
the language of "horse". Pat explains Levels 1 to 3 as:
| |
Level 1 is respect, partnership and mental collection |
| |
Level 2 is impulsion, harmony and emotional collection |
| |
Level 3 is flexion, refinement and physical collection |
